How It Works
The India Export Process, Step by Step
6 min read

Exporting from India follows a clear sequence once your registrations are in place. This guide outlines the steps from setup to shipment and getting paid.
Before you export
- Obtain an IEC (Importer Exporter Code) and GSTIN.
- Register your AD code with the port for banking.
- Confirm any product-specific licences or certifications.
Order to shipment
- Agree commercial terms and the Incoterm with the buyer.
- Prepare the commercial invoice and packing list.
- Book freight and arrange transport to the port or ICD.
- File the Shipping Bill and complete export customs clearance.
- Load and obtain the bill of lading or air waybill.
After shipment
Send shipping documents to the buyer or through the bank (for example under a Letter of Credit), realise export proceeds, and keep records for GST and any export incentives. A forwarder and customs broker can manage the logistics and filing throughout.
