What Are Terminal Handling Charges (THC)?
3 min read

Terminal Handling Charges (THC) are fees levied by the port or terminal operator for moving and handling containers within the terminal. They appear at both the origin and destination ports.
What THC covers
- Loading and unloading containers between the vessel and the terminal.
- Moving and positioning containers within the terminal yard.
- Use of terminal equipment and infrastructure.
Who pays THC
THC is charged separately from ocean freight and applies at both ends. Who bears origin and destination THC depends on the agreed Incoterm and the carrier tariff, so clarify this when you receive a quote to avoid surprises.
