What Is a Container Freight Station (CFS)?
4 min read

A Container Freight Station (CFS) is a facility, usually located close to a seaport, where less-than-container-load (LCL) cargo is consolidated and de-consolidated and where containers can be examined and customs-cleared.
What happens at a CFS
- LCL shipments from many shippers are consolidated into one container for export.
- On import, containers are de-stuffed and cargo is separated for individual consignees.
- Customs examination and clearance can take place at the CFS.
- Cargo is stored briefly before pickup or onward movement.
CFS vs ICD
A CFS sits near the port and mainly handles consolidation, de-consolidation and examination. An Inland Container Depot (ICD) is located inland and acts more like a dry port, with full customs clearance away from the coast. They serve similar functions at different points in the journey.
