Shipping from India to Australia: Ports, Transit & Quarantine

Australia is a valuable market for Indian exporters, but it has some of the world strictest biosecurity controls. Meeting quarantine requirements is as important as the routing itself.
Routes and ports
Exports leave Nhava Sheva, Mundra or Chennai for Australian ports such as Sydney (Port Botany), Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle (Perth). Services often tranship through a Southeast Asian hub like Singapore.
Typical transit times
- Ocean FCL: approximately 18 to 30 days depending on the destination port and transhipment.
- Air freight: generally 3 to 7 days.
Biosecurity and packaging
- Australian biosecurity (managed by the agriculture department) inspects for pests, soil, plant and animal material.
- ISPM-15 treated and marked wood packaging is mandatory; untreated timber risks rejection.
- Containers and cargo must be clean; some goods require fumigation or treatment certificates.
