RoRo Shipping Explained (Roll-on/Roll-off)
4 min read

RoRo stands for roll-on/roll-off. These vessels carry wheeled cargo that drives directly on and off the ship via ramps, making them ideal for vehicles and self-propelled machinery.
How RoRo works
Instead of lifting cargo by crane, wheeled units are driven up a ramp onto vehicle decks and secured for the voyage. At the destination, they are simply driven off. This avoids the lifting and packing that containerised or breakbulk cargo needs.
Typical RoRo cargo
- Cars, trucks, buses and trailers.
- Construction and agricultural machinery.
- Other wheeled or tracked self-propelled equipment.
