Breakbulk vs Containerized Cargo: What Is the Difference?

Most ocean cargo travels in standard containers, but some does not. Breakbulk is cargo loaded individually rather than in containers, and it remains essential for goods that do not fit the container mould.
What breakbulk is
Breakbulk cargo is shipped as separate units such as crates, drums, bags, bundles or large pieces, loaded and secured directly in the vessel hold. It suits oversized, heavy or non-standard cargo that cannot or should not go into a container.
Breakbulk vs containerized
- Containerized: standardised, faster handling, lower damage risk, easier multimodal transfer.
- Breakbulk: flexible for oversized and heavy items, but slower to load and more handling.
- Choice depends on size, weight, packaging and port equipment.
