Inland waterways move cargo along rivers and canals using barges and small vessels. With major rivers running through the country, India is developing inland water transport as a low-cost, low-emission complement to road and rail.
How it works
Cargo is loaded onto barges at river terminals and moved along navigable waterways to other terminals, where it transfers to road or rail for final delivery. It is especially suited to heavy and bulk cargo over long river stretches.
