Choosing the Right Transport Mode
5 min read

Every shipment is a trade-off between cost, speed and reliability. Choosing the right mode, or combination of modes, is one of the most important decisions in logistics.
The main trade-offs
- Ocean: cheapest for large volumes over long distances, but slowest.
- Air: fastest for urgent or high-value cargo, but most expensive.
- Road: flexible and door-to-door, best for shorter hauls and last mile.
- Rail: cost-effective for long-distance and bulk land movement.
- Waterways and coastal: efficient for bulk along rivers and coasts.
A simple decision approach
Start with the deadline and budget, then factor in distance, cargo weight and volume, and any special handling. Often the best answer is multimodal: combining a cheap long-haul mode with road for the first and last mile.
